Welcome to Ye Olde Blazoner

What is a Blazoner?

Put simply a Blazoner is someone who crafted the Coat of Arms, or "A Blazon" as it was called.

The word Blazonry relates to the elements placed upon the Blazon. A Coat of Arms was used by one family. No two families were allowed to use the same one. With each changing of the family, the Coat of Arms would also change.

The Blazoner was the person commissioned to create the new design and register it. The modern day Blazoners would be the College of Arms in London who create the Coat of Arms for the Royal Family, Guilds, Businesses, other Gentry (Earls, Dukes, etc)

Today, the Coat of Arms registered for surnames would be just one that was recorded in history that was linked to the name. Finding the Coat of Arms is simple. Just enter your surname into the box above and see if yours is listed.

This Coat of Arms could be the one that was recorded in 1086 with the creation of The Doomsday Book commissioned by Duke William of Normandy.

People thought that this book would be the end of peoples lives by recording how many pigs, goats, cows, how many huts in village, how many people to each hut there would be no more privacy for them.
